Wow, these are some terrible photos of some inbetween-series play that happened in December, I was messing around with a squeegee and lots of paint. Sometimes it's nice to make something that is intended to be carefully rolled up and subsequently lost in the corner of the studio.

Just some of the charming remnants of boredom left on the sides of the giant worktables In my classroom at Orange Coast College. The tables are incredibly old, the first pic is of the surface which is delaminated, carved and terrible to draw on. Every other classroom in the building which is relatively new has new, clean, beautiful formica worktables, it's almost like they built the building around the tables which where left over from some previous and slightly less advanced civilization.

A buddy let me borrow a game camera designed to take shots of deer or gophers or alligators or whatever it is that people like to shoot at, after said animal trips an invisible beam. I posted it along the side of my driveway hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the neighborhood raccoons or squirrels that have seemingly been getting drunk on the neighbor's rotting figs. No such luck, got one shot of a sweet looking bird sitting on the fence, everything else seemed like it needed to be formed into a time lapse, not amazing maybe I should post the camera some place interesting next time.

My Summer Thus Far Part 2

Now that I have real work space, my parents have been pushing me to move the remaining stuff that I have squirreled away all over their house. One of the items was a four drawer file cabinet that i have been filling up with drawings, notebooks, and super random paperwork since the 8th grade. I threw out what I thought was a lot of stuff like crazy old drawings and manuals for fax machines, but It's still basically full. Among the wackness were these "Carpads" that I started keeping (and still do) when I first got a car. I found my self on the road a lot between school and home and drawing and jotting notes while driving made it feel like just slightly less of a waste of time. Yes, it was probably dangerous, I had a little suction-cup clipboard which is why all these are tiny notepads, this setup was fine for a while but I eventually bent a coat hanger to fit through a spiral bound pad and hang on my steering wheel at the same time. At any rate, the drawings are absolute crap and the notes are incomprehensible if not completely insane, but the covers are nice right? I might post some pics later if I get a slow day.

My Summer Thus Far Part 1

It's been a super busy summer for me between teaching every day and everything else I try to squeeze in. Thought I might share a few of the things I've been up to. I spent a almost a full week at the beginning of August, at the Huntington Beach Art Center working on this project with the Summer art camp. The theme for the week was dragons, so naturally me being me, I had them make masks, build a city complete with tanks, and helicopters and such and on the last day, they destroyed the whole thing. It was a pretty awesome week working with the little kids, except this one who blew in my face and asked if his breath smelled better now that he had eaten a cough drop. Sweet kid, my cold is just now clearing up.

I think I forgot to post this last summer when the paint was still fresh. I posed for friend and fellow artist Bradford Salamon for a couple hours at the festival of arts in Laguna Beach, and this awesome little painting came out of it. I think he made me look more badass/sensitive/better looking than i am in real life. Word out on the street is that a photo of me posing made it on the brochure for this year's festival.

It's doubtful that these are going to be interesting to anyone else, but here are a couple shots from early April of my garage slowly turning into an insulated, drywalled, respectable looking studio. We've been working feverishly on and off since December to make the new/old house more live-able, part of the deal I struck was that I would work on the rest of the house before getting lost in improvements to the garage. I have been working in there for a couple weeks now on a project for the HBAC and I totally love the space. I am still working with less than perfect furniture, I figured, live with it for a while, figure out what I really need and want, but none the less, it is an extremely comfortable space to work in. I'll post some shots sooner or later of the studio with my junk in it.

I've been disgustingly busy lately, so much so that the random distractions which occasionally end up posted here have been entirely put on hold. One on the last distractions I was tinkering with before getting ultra busy, was the deconstruction or a flat bed scanner and an attempted reconstruction of it into a scanning camera. I was working on this for a couple weeks with one Mr. N. Cohen before we more or less decided that it wasn't going to happen with the scanner we were working with. It wasn't a complete loss, we learned a lot about the mechanics of a scanner in the process, and discovered a small series of lenses that have proven to be kind of entertaining. Attached to the front of my cellphone's camera, The combo makes for a nearly impossible-to-focus macro camera. Though not quite as good as what's been done before, It's still entertaining.

The first two pics are of the same subject at the same distance, the first without the lens, the second with it. The other shots are of random plants. I really like the depth of field that it has to offer.

The Sea-Beast Has Sailed!

The voyage of the Sea-Beast was a success. Though I perhaps didn't get as far south as I initially would have liked, the whole experience was a positive one and nothing serious went wrong or malfunctioned. We launched at 8:30 am at the end of the peninsula in Long Beach in front of a crowd of disinterested fishermen and landed at the very end of Bolsa Chica State Beach to the delight of glassy-eyed beach goers. I'll post a video when I get it edited down and more pics on my site in the next week or so, Until then, here's the GPS info: 3.4 mph average, 7.25 miles total, 2:06 time.

Enter The Sea Beast

Another project I've been considering for a while now is the Sea Beast.(more on that later) Today I purchased the flotation and propulsion elements, now to build the beast! Oh, and of course learn the rules and regulations of boat safety. I once got a boating ticket for a violation of rule 658A (towing an aquaplane device without an observer) so I am naturally a bit paranoid of the aqua fuzz.

This is a distraction that has eaten up a couple hours: I got to thinking about those super ghetto rims that continue to spin when a car is at a stop and realized that using technology from 1832 one could create rims that are animated. This is a slight variation of the phenakistoscope, the predecessor of the zoetrope. Built out of super cheap materials, the design basically works. I think the inclusion of some washers between the boards, heavier materials, and maybe some counterbalancing would produce even better results... But I'm on to being distracted by other things now.

Very bored this week. No new exciting projects or time to follow up on continuing ones, did have one idea though: Instead of scented pens, some arch-chemist should create flavored/edible pens to go along with edible paper, want pizza? draw one out, just make sure to draw over the tomato sauce flavored pen with the melted cheese one. There could be different textured edible papers, some that are more crunchy, others that are chewy. Most scented pens come in sets of 8 or 12 right? I wonder what the 12 most essential/versatile flavors would be? Here are a couple completely unrelated and terrible looking self portraits done with a flat bed scanner.

I have always known there were a lot of people with the same name out there, but until now it's been more or less abstract, I've never met another person with the same name. I recently discovered that the crapy CMOS sensor on my Motorola cellphone pans as takes an image which allows for some pretty cool looking distortion. I'm totally pumped about this, though apparently no one I've talked about it with could care less. I would like to know what could be accomplished with the same crappy sensor and a better lens.

With Spring Break coming up, I've been prepping for and fixating on a couple of hikes I want to take. The more backpacking I do, the more I try leave behind while still maintaining a degree of comfort and preparedness for the possible. These pics represent the evolution of my travel watercolor kit over the years.

The first pic is a Sennelier travel kit, the collapsable cup I actually used jammed with sand in San Sebastian Spain and stopped working before subsequently falling apart. The second pic is a 24-pan enamel box filled with Daniel Smith watercolors that I took along on my 20,000 mile US road trip. The last couple are what I've been using lately: tiny toy tins or plastic novelty watercolor boxes with the crapy colors that came with them replaced with single daubs of DS paint, a collapsing Isabey sable brush, all housed in a one liter Sea to Summit Waterproof stuff sack.

I just discovered that someone, presumably a student of mine has created and been ghost writing a twitter page for me. Mostly it's quotes from me, said in the classroom, free of context so as to seem completely arbitrary. It's pretty flattering, but I can't see who the followers of the page are so that's kind of a bummer. Go to the page, become a follower, whom ever has been managing the page has done a better job than I would have.
